Fisher Island was once the private family island of the Vanderbilt family. Although no longer private, Fisher Island still remains somewhat inaccessible to the public and uninvited guests as it is accessible only by ferry (or by boat utilizing a private marina). Therefore the island still provides similar refuge and retreat for its residents, which include Oprah Winfrey, Boris Becker and Mel Brooks among other celebrities. The island contains mansions, a hotel, several condominium buildings, an observatory, and a private marina. Fortunately the Mediterranean Revival style of the original mansions has been preserved even when new development flourished. Condominium buildings on the island include Bayview, Palazzo del Sol, Bayside, Oceanside, Villa del Mare, and Palazzo del Mare. Fun fact: Fisher Island had the highest per capita income of any place in the United States in 2010.
