A recent finding of pottery found on Black Hammock Island traces of humans back to 2500 BC in the Jacksonville area. When the Europeans arrived during the 16th century the native inhabitants during that time were the Mocama. Jacksonville was named after Andrew Jackson when the region became part of the United States in 1821.
