Located south of Daytona and north of Cape Canaveral, New Smyrna Beach, FL, is a coastal Atlantic community with land on the barrier islands and the mainland. The Indian River runs through town, forming a series of smaller islands until it meets the Halifax River at the Ponce de Leon Inlet. Access to the island side of the city is available over two causeways. Nearby communities include Glencoe, Edgewater, Port Orange and Ponce Inlet. Flying in, the Daytona Beach International Airport is the most popular option. There are also some charter services available to the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Airport right in town. Due to the proximity of Port Canaveral, some visitors also get to New Smyrna Beach via cruise ship.
The beaches and riverside on the island tend to draw people who are interested in living close to nature and the water. Surfers, boating enthusiasts and anyone interested in any type of aquatic adventures would have a lifetime of waterways to explore in this area. The island also offers unparalleled access to the Canaveral National Seashore and the Mosquito Lagoon Aquatic Preserve. Operated by the National Park Service, these natural spaces are home to a variety of wildlife, such as Florida's famous manatee population. Although the laid-back, surf-town atmosphere is relatively constant throughout the entire city, the mainland side is a little different than the island. Historic Canal Street has a number of shops, including some laid-back, trendy dining and nightlife options. The neighborhoods along the river cater to boating enthusiasts, as most of the homes have private docks. On both sides, there is a high concentration of shopping, restaurants and everyday essentials running along the causeway roads.
